Sheryl (Sherry) Uithoven was born on June 28, 1948, to Jacob and Dorothy (Warnes) Uithoven in Brookings, South Dakota. She grew up in the Colton, South Dakota area and attended country school and then Tri-Valley school. Sherry married Robert Montoya in June of 1979, in Golden, Colorado; they lived in Denver, Colorado until Bob’s death in 2000. Sherry returned to South Dakota, moving to Sioux Falls in order to be close to her parents. Sherry moved to a nursing home in 2017 because of complications from epilepsy.
Despite life-long health struggles, Sherry lived an independent life; as a child she liked to swim and ride her bicycle; as an adult she enjoyed shopping, singing in a church choir, and watching Hallmark movies, John Wayne movies, and crime shows. She loved her family and God.
One of Sherry’s most exciting life highlights occurred in August 2019; her son, whom she gave up for adoption at birth in 1969, located her and visited. Tears of joy were shed that day! Reuniting with her son gave her peace of mind in knowing that he had been loved by his adoptive parents.
At age 73, Sherry passed peacefully Wednesday, February 9, 2022, at Bethesda of Beresford, South Dakota.
Grateful for having shared her life are her mother, Dorothy Uithoven, Vermillion, SD; son, William Long (Phoenix, AZ); siblings, Keith Uithoven (Ellicott City, MD), Darrel Uithoven (Cary, NC), and Sandra Shumaker (Vermillion, SD); many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, September 29, 2000; her father, September 5, 2012; and a brother, Terry Uithoven, January 2, 1981.
Burial will take place at the Colton Cemetery at a later date.
