Linda Shirl Pierret

Linda Shirl Pierret,, age 83, of Garretson, SD, passed away peacefully on August 6, 2026, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Thursday, August 13, 2026 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Garretson, SD with Fr. Kevin O’Dell celebrating.

Visitation will be from 5 - 7 PM with Vigil & Rosary starting at 7 PM, on Wednesday, August 12th at the Minnehaha Funeral Home in Garretson.

Linda was born on October 16, 1942, in Flint, Michigan, to James and Leora “Orrie” (Ostrowsky) Whaley.

Linda spent her early years in Flint while her father was away serving in World War II and her mother worked at the shipyard. When her father returned from the war, the family moved to Northern Minnesota, where they managed a resort. Eventually, they moved back to Sioux Falls to be closer to family.

Linda graduated from Washington Senior High School in 1960. She went on to graduate from South Dakota State University in 1964 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Wildlife Management. She later attended Sioux Falls College, where she earned her teaching certificate.

On June 11, 1964, Linda married Richard “Dick” Meidl. During their marriage, Linda taught in Corsica and Hurley. Dick passed away in 1969.

On July 17, 1971, Linda married Donald Pierret at Christ the King Catholic Church in Sioux Falls, SD. They lived on Main Avenue in Garretson for four years before moving to their farm northwest of Garretson in 1977. While Don farmed, Linda substitute taught in Garretson and other area schools.

In the early 1980s, Linda began working nights as a CNA at Palisade Manor. Later, she became the Activity Director, a role that was a perfect fit for her. Linda poured her heart and soul into bringing joy, laughter, and companionship to each and every resident. She had a gift for making people feel included and making ordinary days a little more special.

Linda was involved in numerous activities and organizations throughout her life, including CCD, 4-H, Girl Scouts, the Newman Club, TOPS, Red Hatters, Birthday Club, ceramics, and Couples Club, just to name a few. She was always willing to try something new, meet someone new, or find another way to stay involved in her community.

Of all Linda’s passions, however, her family and animals were at the very top of the list.

Her three children have countless memories of Linda and the way she could turn just about any activity into an adventure, no matter how big or small. Camping in the Black Hills, trips to Valleyfair, Las Vegas, Florida, and a family cruise were all made more memorable simply because Linda was along for the ride.

The family cruise was especially special to Linda—and she was incredibly proud of it. She planned every meticulous detail, creating an itinerary filled with memorable experiences. But Linda knew that the anticipation was just as important as the trip itself. To build excitement for the cruise, she hosted themed parties for her grandchildren, helping them prepare and creating a buildup that made the cruise one of the most memorable—and talked about—family adventures.

Linda had a way of making life an adventure. She found joy in bringing people together, creating memories, caring for others, and making sure no one missed out on a little fun along the way.

Survivors include her children, Wayne (Kim) Pierret of Sherman and Heidi Alban of Pierre; grandchildren, Colby (Jessica) Pierret, Hayden Pierret, Morgan Pierret, Elijah (Lila) Pierret, Clayton Alban, and Nolan Alban; great-grandchildren, Colson Pierret, Crew Pierret, baby-to-be Pierret, and Teagan Flottmeyer-Alban; sister, Susan (Richard) Anderson; and special friends, Morgan Malcomb, Maxwell Scott, Madison Schroeder, and Ava Flottmeyer.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Leora “Orrie” Whaley; her husbands, Richard “Dick” Meidl and Donald Pierret; and her daughter, Wendy Pierret.

Linda leaves behind a lifetime of memories, adventures, laughter, and love. Her caring heart, adventurous spirit, and ability to make every moment special will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
