Jerome Johnson, age 82, of Garretson, passed away on Sunday, January 7, 2018, at the Sanford Hospice Cottage in Luverne, MN. Funeral services will begin at 1:00 PM Friday, January 12, 2018, at the Zion Lutheran Church, Garretson. Visitation will be from 5-7:30 PM Thursday, at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Garretson. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be directed to the Garretson American Legion, Blue Dragon Foundation, or the Zion Lutheran Elevator Fund.
Jerome Arden Johnson was born on April 6, 1935, in Garretson, to Arthur L. and Hannah E. (Bratsberg) Johnson. He grew up in and lived and farmed his entire life in rural Garretson. He graduated from Garretson High School in 1953. On March 5, 1955, he married Shirley Hoven at Palisade Lutheran Church, rural Garretson.
Jerome served in the Minnesota National Guard from 1953-1961. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church where he served as council president and the Garretson American Legion where he was a past commander and active in the color guard. He was active with the American Ag Movement, Palisades Township, and was honored to serve as a South Dakota World War II Honor Flight escort.
Jerome had a deep love for his family, friends, and the land on which he farmed. He greatly enjoyed watching his grandchildren’s activities. He was a hobby pilot and enjoyed fishing and hunting.
Jerome is survived by his wife, Shirley, of Garretson; children: Cheryl (Dale Zweep) Scholl, Garretson, and her children, Chad, Adam, Jerry, and Kristi; Linda (Jon Bly) Hansen, Garretson, and her children, Joel and Jeffery; Mark (Lisa) Johnson, Garretson, and their children, Luke, Sam, and Maddie; and Scott (Diana Griffith) Johnson, Missoula, MT; brother, Richard (Eileen) Johnson, Garretson; sisters-in-law: Dian Hoven, Colton, Pauline Ellefson, Watertown, and Janet Davis, Wentworth; brothers-in-law: Dennis (Madeline) Hoven, Garretson, Perry Ellefson, Colorado, and Bud Grocott, Montrose; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Jerome was preceded in death by his parents, son-in-law, Joseph Scholl, granddaughter, Patti Jo Scholl, and parents-in-law, Elmer and Hilda Hoven.
