Belva Brende, age 101, of Sioux Falls, formerly of Baltic, passed away on Tuesday, August 30, 2016, at Prince of Peace in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will begin at 10:00 am Friday, September 2, 2016, at the East Nidaros Lutheran Church, rural Baltic. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 pm Thursday, at the church.

Belva Gunelia Aspaas was born in Minnehaha County 101 years ago. Her parents, Annie Nyhus Aspaas and Iver Aspaas, spoke Norwegian, as did Belva when she went to country school, just like her brothers Nils Aspaas and Dr. Paul Aspaas. Belva milked cows at age 5, and tended to her baby brother Paul at age 6. Belva graduated from Baltic with better grades that her husband or son, then stayed on the farm to tend to her ailing parents, the pigs, chickens, cows, sheep, cats, dogs, while her brothers went off to Augustana College. At age 25, she married the 22 year old neighbor, Olaf. They farmed on Belva’s homestead from their 1940 marriage until for health reasons they moved to Sioux Falls to live with their only child about eight years ago. Olaf went to Heaven September 2, 2010 and Belva stayed on the last six years with her son until the very end, Tuesday night, August 29 th .

Belva was the ultimate caregiver, tending to one or more from age 6 until she went to be with Olaf and beautiful granddaughter Kari Ann. She met every goal in life except one!

Missing her forever and ever are her son, Arlie, her beloved daughter-in-law Nellie, her “in Heaven” granddaughter Kari Ann’s two sons, Sam and Zac, raised by grandma Nellie for 12 years now, her Kansas granddaughter Laura Hales, great-grandsons Sydney and Montgomery, her Sioux Falls grandson Tom, Claudia and their two Brende’s, Jacob and Taylor, many other great relatives, and hundreds of folks who would be proud to call Belva family.

She would never want to cause problems for anyone, so we scheduled her funeral on 48 hours notice as to not interfere with your Labor Day Weekend!

Beating her to Heaven were her parents, her two brothers, her “love her til death” husband, Olaf, and darling granddaughter, Kari Ann.

Family request memorials be directed to the East Nidaros Lutheran Cemetery.
