Dolores Kangley died at Dougherty Hospice House, Sioux Falls, SD, March 17, 2015, surrounded by family who sang her to Heaven.
Dolores Jeanette Leopard, daughter of Lee and Thelma (Barton) Leopard, was born July 15, 1929, in her maternal grandmother's house in Waterloo, Iowa.
Dolores attended school at St. John's, Waterloo, Iowa. She graduated high school at Immaculate Conception Cathedral High School, Denver, Colorado, in 1948. After Dolores and her family returned to Iowa, she worked the telephone switch board at the hotel Russell-Lamson in Waterloo. There she met Don Kangley, from Hawkeye, Iowa, another hotel employee. They were married at St. John's Catholic Church, Waterloo, on November 26, 1949.
Dolores and Don began their family and lived in Waterloo for a number of years. They lived in Sumner, Iowa, from 1961 until returning to Waterloo in early 1963, and subsequently moved to Sioux Falls, SD, in August 1963. There Dolores continued her important occupation as a housewife and mom to seven children. After a few years in Mitchell, SD, they made a final return to Sioux Falls in 1972.
Don Kangley died in 1993. Dolores worked later in life cleaning houses for a number of people who became long term friends. After her husband’s death she was able to make many enjoyable trips around the country for fun and also many family visits.
The past two years, Dolores lived in Oakwood Assisted Living, Prince of Peace, Sioux Falls, enjoying the wonderful friends and activities available. She was very social. She suffered a slow health decline over the past year. Her son diagnosed her with the “dwindles.” After a brief hospitalization in late January, she spent some time in the Rehab unit at Prince of Peace, and finally entered Dougherty Hospice House about two weeks prior to her death. She appreciated the loving comforting care provided to her at Dougherty House but also the quiet and serenity as well.
Dolores is survived by three sons: Daniel (Jeanne) Kangley, Sioux Falls, SD; David (Rose) Kangley, Dell Rapids; Douglas (Jean) Kangley, Sioux Falls, SD; four daughters: Debra (Steven) Duncan, Monticello, Minn., Diana (Myron) Nohava, Baltic, SD; Doreen (Jay) Hardy, Sioux Falls, SD; Denise Charlton, Sioux Falls, SD; 20 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren; two sisters: Elizabeth Berger, Pennsylvania, and Kathy Geffre, Aberdeen, SD.
