Harry E. Benson, 92, of Crooks died Monday, September 22, 2014 at the Avera Dells Area Hospital.

Funeral services will be 10:30 A. M. Thursday, September 25, 2014 at Benton Lutheran Church, rural Crooks. Visitation with the family present will be from 6-8:00 PM Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in the Benton Lutheran Cemetery.

Harry was born January 7, 1922 to Hjalmer and Christina (Johnson) Benson at his Grandmother Benson’s farm in Lyons Township. He attended Elm View grade school, 9th and 10th grade in Crooks and 11th and 12th grades at Lyons High School, graduating in 1941.
He was a member of Benton Lutheran Church where he was baptized and confirmed. He served on the church council and various committees.

Harry married Louise Thulin November 9, 1945 in Valley Springs. He farmed in the Crooks, Valley Springs and Beaver Creek, Minnesota areas. He ran the Benson Service gas station in Crooks for 5 years before returning to the farm in the Crooks area. He retired from farming in 1983 and moved into Crooks. He served on the Farmers elevator board and two terms on the Crooks City Council and worked part time for EN-R-G- Max Feed and the Crooks Fertilizer Plant for several years. Louise died February 9, 2008.

Harry enjoyed playing cards, visiting with family and friends and driving around checking the crops.

Those left to cherish his memory are his son, Kenny (Linda) Benson, Crooks; his daughter, Bonnie Stefani, Sioux Falls; four grandchildren, Lori (Bob) Potratz, Mike (Lisa) Benson, Robert Stefani, Emily (Ryan) Van Meekeren; eight great grandchildren, Annika, Taylor, Will, Corral, Chicago, Micah, Mercedes, and Bailey; a brother, Rudy Benson, Crooks; a sister-in-law, Doris Larson and numerous other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise in 2008 his parents, three brothers, Carl, Harold, and Leroy; two sisters, Alma Anderson and Stella Brendtro and a son-in-law, Ed Stefani.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Avera Dells Area Hospital for the compassionate care Harry received.
