John C. Scholten, 74, of Dell Rapids passed away Monday, June 9, 2014.

Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 AM Thursday, June 12, 2014 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Dell Rapids. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 3:00 PM with the family present at 5:00 PM and a Wake Service at 7:00 PM Wednesday, June 11, 2014 at Minnehaha Funeral Home in Dell Rapids.

John was born July 13, 1939 to John and Alieda (Lens) Scholten at Alvord, Iowa. As an infant he moved with his family to a farm near Larchwood, Iowa. He attended country school for a few years and then attended St. Mary Grade School where he graduated from the 8th grade. John then worked for farmers in the area.

On November 9, 1960 he was united in marriage to Dorothy Koerlin at St. Joseph Cathedral in Sioux Falls. They lived on a farm near Larchwood where he worked until moving to Dell Rapids in 1964.

In 1969 John had a debilitating stroke and nine years later had heart surgery. In 2004 John had more serious heart surgery. He volunteered at St. Mary lunch room for fourteen years. John and Dorothy took many bus trips and enjoyed camping with their girls when they were younger.

John is survived by his wife, Dorothy, Dell Rapids; daughters, Lori (Mark) Waltz, Gaylord, MN and Joan (Jerry) McIlvenna, Sioux Falls; four grandchildren, Christopher (Andy) Waltz, Jonathon Waltz and special friend, Erin, Brianna Wuestewald and special friend, Austin and Abigayl McIlvenna ; two great-grandchildren, Grace and Oliver Waltz; brothers, George (Donna) Scholten, Luverne, MN and Cletus (Shirley) Scholten, Sioux Falls; sisters, Mary Lou Kearney, Sioux City, IA and Rose (Dale) Carman, Sioux Falls; sisters-in-law, Arliss Scholten, Sandy Scholten, Sharon Scholten and Carol Olson; brothers-in-law, Ray Burkard and Richard Tuschen; as well as many nieces; nephews and friends.

John was preceded in death by his parents; two infant brothers; brothers, Paul, Ray, Joe and Larry; sisters, Betty (Louie) Wall, Theresa (Martin) Schettler, Dorothy (Francis) Schettler, Ann Burkard, Irene (Joe) Soldatke and Veronica Tuschen; brothers-in-law, Joe Soldatke, Chuck Kearney and Merlin Olson.
