Richard A. Swier, age 86, of Phoenix, Arizona, formerly of Colton, South Dakota, died on October 27, 2013 in Phoenix.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Monday, November 4, 2013 at the First Reformed Church, Colton. Burial will be in the Colton Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3-5:00 PM Sunday at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Colton.
Richard “Rich” was born on February 26, 1927, in Lyons South Dakota. The 3rd Son of 10 Children to Walter Swier and Dorothy (Van der Lugt) Swier. Married to Cathryn Leona Harmelink on June 19, 1947.
Together they started their family and business “Swier Plumbing, Heating and Electric in Colton, SD. “To Get Rich call Cash”. He enhanced the farming industry in the Midwest for many. Then moved to Glendale, AZ in August 1969, started Rica Plumbing, Electric and Heating & Cooling, became a Plan review and Building inspector for Maricopa County Building and Safety. Also a FHA & VA compliance inspector and retired at age 62.
Rich was a strong Christian, supported his church, WVCF in Sun City, his maintenance and building background greatly assisted in the most recent building remodel of the fellowship hall. He also served on several local boards, P&A Colton, SD, West Valley Christian Fellowship Church and Villa De Paz Golf team.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Cathryn and 5 of 7 children: Danny, Robert, Kristine, Richard and Kathleen. His passing was preceded by his sons William and Martin. He is also survived by his brother, Ernie Swier and Sisters, Grace Farr and Rosie Chiesa along with 17 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
