Pete Jay Van Hofwegen


Pete Van Hofwegen , age 59, of Humboldt, died on Saturday, February 2, 2013, at the Sanford Hospice Cottage in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will begin at 1:00 PM Thursday, February 7, 2013, at the Faith Community Church, Colton. Visitation will be from 5-8:00 PM Wednesday, at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society, Sanford Hospice Cottage, or Hope Haven.

Pete Van Hofwegen was born on August 5, 1953, in Sioux Center, Iowa, to Adrian and Ellen (Cuperus) Van Hofwegen. He grew up in Colton and attended the Colton Christian School. He spent a short time living in Iowa, but spent most of his life in the Colton/Humboldt area. On April 30, 1974, he married Sharleen Reurink in Colton.

Besides farming all of his life, Pete also drove school bus for 18 years for Montrose and Tri-Valley, as well as driving truck for various businesses since the summer of 1999. He served on the church council and was an active member of the Faith Community Church in Colton. He was also a board member of Clear Lake Township for many years. Pete enjoyed talking with friends over a cup of coffee, but the most important thing in his life was his family.

Survivors include his wife, Sharleen, of Humboldt; children: Jill (Bruce) Pearson of Crooks, Kellie (Jared) Wicks of Colton, Derry (Megan) Van Hofwegen of Colton, and Tara Van Hofwegen of Mitchell; seven grandchildren: Ellie, Ava, Emery, and Reagan Pearson, and Braden, Corie, and Devin Wicks; father, Adrian Van Hofwegen, Sioux Center, IA; step-father, Anthony Smit, Hull, IA; siblings: Noella (Edwin) Haveman, Hull, IA, Bonnie (Philip) De Stigter, Sioux Center, IA, and LuAnn (Eldon) De Wild, Hull, IA; and eight step-siblings. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Stacey Marie in 1980, and mother, Ellen Smit in 2012.
